Please read the Official Rules governing this competition before entering. By participating in the MedTech Color Pitch Competition (the “Competition”), you accept and agree to abide by these Official Rules and represent and warrant that you meet the eligibility requirements.  In addition, you agree to accept that MedTech Color’s decisions on all issues relating to the Competition, including eligibility, shall be final and legally binding in all respects.

In these Official Rules, all businesses who are eligible to participate in the Competition shall be collectively be referred to as the “Participants” and each, a “Participant.”

The Competition is set, moderated, administered and managed by MedTech Color in collaboration with the following Sponsors:

Johnson and Johnson

California Health Foundation

(each, a “Sponsor” and collectively, “the Sponsors”).

  1. Eligibility (Restrictions Apply)

The Competition is open to businesses that meet the following criteria:

  • The business must have a founder who identifies as Black or LatinX;
  • The Black or LatinX founder must own a minimum of 50% of the company that is competing in the competition;
  • The Business must not have raised more than $1M in grants, VC, angel investments, or outside funding; and

Immediate family members of, and those living in the same household as, anyone from MedTech Color, a Sponsor, or any of their respective affiliated and subsidiary companies who are involved in setting up, administering or managing the Competition (collectively, the “Associated Parties”) are not eligible to enter this Competition.

  1. How to Apply

Applicants must submit an application with general information about the applicant Company using one of the following methods:

  • Attend a Optional Q&A session and submit a paper application; or
  • Apply via third-party social media link

Only one application per business is permitted.

  1. Timing and Description of Competition

The Competition opens on January 1st, 2021 and closes on February 10, 2021 at 11:59 PM. Any application(s) submitted after this date or using means outside of those described in Section 3 will not be considered.


During this round Judges will access the Participants’ applications, executive summary, pitch deck, and other submitted materials (collectively, the “Supporting Materials”) and conduct a phone or video interview with Participants as needed.

Ten Participants (“Final Participants”) will be notified by February 12, 2021, that they have been selected to attend a required 6-week MasterclassName Session and then the Final Presentation Round.


The Final Participants who complete the mandatory mini masterclassName accelerator will be eligible to participate in the Final Presentation where they will present a business pitch to the Judges.

The Final Presentation Round will be held on March 23, 2021 in Los Angeles via Virtual Session.]

At the end of the Final Presentation Round, three winning Participants will be chosen.

  1. Judging Criteria

At each phase of the competition, the Participants will be judged based on the strength of the Participant’s business plan, the quality of the Participant’s presentation, and the innovativeness and commercial viability of the relevant product.

The Competition judges will be subject matter experts, venture capitalists, and other industry specialists (collectively, the “Judges”).

  1. Prizes

At the end of the Final Presentation Round, three Participants will be chose (the “Winning Participants”).  The Winning Participants will receive a cash prize (each, a “Prize”) as follows:

$25K Grand Prize

$15K Second Place

$10K Third Place

All Winning Participants will also receive memberships to Matter.Health.

Prizes are not negotiable, not exchangeable and non-transferable and must not be used to fund or support any illegal enterprise or activity.

No substitution/transfer/assignment of prize by any Winning Participant is permitted. Reporting and payment of all federal/state/local or other taxes are responsibility of each winner. All federal/state/local laws apply.  

By accepting a Prize, each Winning Participant:

(a)  grants the Associated Parties the right to the use the Winning Participant’s name, likeness, biographical information, and Prize won for future advertising and promotion, without additional compensation, notification or permission, unless prohibited by law; and

(b) agrees to release, discharge and hold harmless the Associated Parties from any and all claims, losses, liabilities, damages, demands or causes of action arising out of such use of the Winning Participant’s information, and/or for the acceptance, use, or misuse of a Prize.

  1. General Rules

All judging decisions are final. MedTech retains the right to disqualify Participants for appropriate cause. MedTech reserves the right to change these rules without formal notice.

Participants should not disclose any confidential information in connection with this Competition.  Supporting Materials will not be kept confidential.  

All materials submitted as a part of this competition must not infringe any third-party intellectual property rights. Participants will retain title and ownership to all intellectual property rights associated with their Supporting Materials, except with respect to any third-party intellectual property incorporated therein.

Participants shall indemnify and hold harmless the Associated Parties for any and all claims, liabilities, costs, damages, and other expenses (including reasonable legal costs and court fees) arising or resulting from, or related to such Participant’s br/each or failure to comply with the duties, obligations and requirements as set forth in these rules.

The Associated Parties are not responsible for incomplete/lost/late/damaged/illegible/misdirected entries or incomplete telephone calls, faulty transmissions, recordings, malfunctions, for technical/hardware/software failures, lost/unavailable network connections, delivery failure or delay, or failed/incomplete/garbled/delayed/faulty computer transmission.
